Ming Yuan

Ming Yuan 2/04  -  Ming Yuan is a boy who was born with hydrocephalus or more commonly, “water on the brain”.  This is a serious birth defect and can cause mental retardation if left unchecked.  Ming Yuan had received a shunt before we got him so the excess fluid is going into a body cavity, relieving pressure on his brain.  He is a fussy little guy who demands lots of attention from his caregivers as well as visitors.  I think he has become aware of the “squeaky wheel” syndrome and is becoming a master at it!

Qing Zheng Qing Zheng 11/26/01 - Qing Zheng was born with cerebral palsy and mental retardation.  He came to us in March of 2006.  When he came, he was somewhat of a “limp noodle” and couldn’t sit up by himself.  He can sit by himself today but is still not a very demonstrative child.  He is very quiet, usually, and seems content to just be by himself.  He ignores toys for the most part.
Wen Shi Wen Shi 2/11/02 – Wen Shi came to us in March of 2006.  He was a very quiet boy and continues to be so.  He has cerebral palsy, a seizure disorder and is mentally retarded.  He requires hand feeding and is unable to toilet himself.  He has benefitted from a “stander” and the gait-trainer to gain more strength.
Dong Lian Dong Lian 1/2/94 We have known Dong Lian since 1999.  He is severely mentally handicapped and also has cerebral palsy.  He is unable to feed himself or toilet himself.  He can not walk and doesn’t interact much with anyone.
Qing Xuan Qing Xuan 9/12/03 Qing Xuan is a girl who came to us in March, 2006.  She is partially blind and has a seizure disorder but can walk.  She is “into” interesting textures and can really “zone in” on a new one!  She loves to dance while being guided by her caregiver and swings her head in a “Stevie Wonder” manner.  Very cute!
Wen Xi Wen Xi 2/18/04 – WenXi was brought to our attention by our friend and physical therapist.  She had met and taken an interest in Wen Xi on previous visits and urged us to take him into our family which we were able to do.  He was born with hydrocephalus, spina bifida and club feet.  He had received a shunt to divert the excess fluid from his brain to a body cavity before we got him and the surgery to cover his spinal cord was also already done, as usual shortly after birth.  In spite of all of his challenges, he is a very bright boy and a real delight to have around.  His PT friend has sent him a used wheelchair and he is able to motor down to the toy room to play with Ming Ge and Migyeong most days.  He is able to feed himself and is beginning to develop quite a vocabulary.
Hong Jiao Hong Jiao 8/4/99  Hong Jiao has been fostered by a private Chinese person who can no longer foster due to failing health.  She is not potty trained, and appears to be autistic.
Ming Ge Ming Ge 1/13/05 – Ming Ge is normal in every way but was born without the left side of her nose including the nostril.  Except for this small defect, she would have never have been given into our care.  We think of it as a “God” thing, and mutually beneficial to her AND us.  She is truly the STAR and a cause of delight to everyone as she continually exhibits the normal behavior that is impossible for the rest of our kids.  She is able to feed herself and even use the “squatter” toilet if it is convenient for her.  She is very cute and goes to find either Migyeong or a caregiver when she needs to “go”.  She has received two corrective surgeries and is well on her way to becoming the beauty she was meant to be.  She and WenXi, another child of normal intelligence, have bonded and are fast friends.  MingGe will soon go to her FOREVER home with loving parents from Maine!  We will miss her but we have secured visitation rights!
Wen Bao Wen Bao 8/15/04 – Wen Bao came to us in March of 2006.  She was born with a seizure disorder and a “funnel chest”, a condition that makes her fragile and weak.  She is unable to walk, talk or feed herself and must be cared for completely by the caregivers.  She is a favorite with the weekend visitors because she is so sweet and beautiful.
Ming Er Ming Er 3/7/03 – Ming Er was born with cerebral palsy and is blind.  He is unable to feed himself and must be cared for completely by a caregiver.  He is able to enjoy sitting in a kiddie chair that is on rollers and allows him to move around with his feet.
Jia Zhi Jia Zhi    This  boy is new to our children’s group and has uncorrected Spina Bifida.  He responds to attention shown to him but most of the caregivers are, naturally, reluctant to move him around too much for fear of damaging the sack of nerve tissue at the base of his spine.  We are hoping that he receives corrective surgery soon.  He also has hydrocephalus, also without a shunt to relieve the pressure.  We hope that this will be done when the surgery on his spina bifida is performed.  Apparently, the spina bifida surgery is thought to be too complicated to be performed in Shenyang and the orphanage plans to send him to Beijing for this surgery sometime in the future.
Jia Yu Jia Yu    This little girl is new to our children’s group.  Besides having cerebral palsy, she has great difficulty in swallowing.  She is very quiet, requires hand feeding of liquid food and wears a diaper.
Hua Yuan Hua Yuan    This little boy is new to our children’s group.  We got him in October of 2008.  He has cerebral palsy, hydrocephalus and is extremely low functioning in every way, requiring hand feeding, he wears a diaper.  He had a shunt a few years ago but it failed.  We were told that he was able to communicate prior to his surgery.  After working with him only a month, he is smiling and raising his arms to be picked up.
Jun Lei Jun Lei    This little boy is new to our children’s group.  He can walk but must be hand fed and wears diapers.
Jun Mei Jun Mei  This little girl, deaf and mentally retarded is new to our children’s group.
Zhi Ao Zhi Ao  5/13/2002 -  He is a very handsome boy but very low functioning.  He has cerebral palsy but is unable to do much.  He requires hand feeding and wears diapers.  He sometimes uses the gait-trainer.
Jia Hao Jia Hao     This is a very cute little boy who is about two years old as of 2008.  He is intelligent and a real charmer but seems to have some kind of weakness in his muscles.  He might have dislocated hips because he exhibits pain when his hips are moved.  He must be hand fed and wears diapers.  He was able to move in the baby walker just this November of 2008.
Zhi Yu Zhi Yu   She has cerebral palsy of the stiff and tonic type.  She has difficulty eating and is being fed liquid food.  She can’t walk and wears diapers.
